1840: John lived in Polk County, Missouri
with his wife, son and 2 daughters. He was a farmer.

May 27, 1850: John was appointed the
first postmaster of Halfway, Missouri. [Halfway]
1850: John was a farmer and lived in Polk
County, Missouri with his second wife, 3 sons and 4 daughters. His son John was
also a farmer and William, Ammity, Ruth and Lucinda were all attending school.
The value of his real property was $1,500. 
August 30, 1856: John was one of the
people appointed to call on citizens for contributions of money, provisions,
etc. for the relief of the Kansas Territory residents who were victims of the
"invasions of Kansas by bodies of armed abolitionists."

1860: John was farming in Benton
Township, Polk County, Missouri with his wife and children. His oldest daughter
and her son were also living with them. The value of his real property was
$4000. 
October 1, 1861 (recorded): John sold to
Barnard Eagan (his son-in-law James Eagan?) 40 acres in Polk County, Missouri
for $100. [PC deed H:166]
January 1, 1864 (recorded September 30,
1864): John sold to John Askern 40 acres in Polk County, Missouri for
$250. [PC deed H:429]
July 29, 1864 (recorded September 30, 1864):
John sold to his son-in-law Bernard Messer 278 acres in Polk County,
Missouri for $1200. Bernard Messer and his wife Ruth sold this land back to
John on April 24, 1865 for the same $1200. [PC deed
H:425 & H:740-1]
April 24, 1865: John sold to John W.
Radcliff 40 acres in Polk County, Missouri for $400. [PC deed H:739-40]
1870: Urlinda, John's widow, was living
in Benton Township, Polk County, Missouri with the two youngest children and
Jesse who was doing the farming. The value of her real property was $5000 and
personal property was $460. 
1880: Urlinda, John's widow, was living
in the village of Halfway, Polk County, Missouri. Her son Dennis and grandson
John Messer were farming. Also living at home were her daughter Martha and her
daughter Margaret's son Alex Reed.
