September 2, 1861:
James enlisted as a private in Company B, 22nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. [PenApp#713151]

April 6, 1862:
James received gunshot wounds at the Battle of Shiloh. "One through the left thigh midway between knee and hip, one in left leg four inches above ankle joint. Slight wound in right arm three inches above wrist." [PenApp#713151]

November 18, 1864:
James was discharged at Camp Dennison as a 2nd Sargeant. [PenApp#713151]

1870:
James was farming in Hickory Township, Coles County, Illinois. [census-Ill]

1880:
James M., James' son was living on his grandfathers farm in Vinton County, Ohio. [census-Ohio]

September 25, 1890:
James applied for a Civil War Pension. He was a resident of Mamoth Spring, Fulton County, Arkansas. [PenApp#713151]
