1920: Helen's mother died when she was about 6 weeks old from Brights disease. She was raised by her Aunt Hattie Hawkins (her mother's sister) in Columbia, SC. She visited her father during the summers after he married Lillie.
She always spelled her name "Brazell" despite the fact that her birth certificate lists her name as "Brazeal". "Brazill" is yet another form of the name. [BarbaraH]
