1853: Joseph received a good education in

arrived in the city of Buffalo, New York and then located in Oxford County,
Ontario, Canada. They stayed there for three years, both marring and engaging
in agricultural pursuits. Page 1

1856: Joseph and his cousin, Joseph
Deachin, each purchased 160 acres of land from the Detroit Land Office in what
was to become Bingham Township in Huron County, Michigan.
[Gwinn]. When attempting to locate their
property, they discovered that the township was actually without settlers;
there were no roads for miles, and the entire county seemed one tract of swamp.
They cut a trail to their land through eight miles of forest and had to bring
supplies from Forestville which was 24 miles away. [Huron]
1860-80: Joseph and his family were farming
in Bingham, Huron County, Michigan [census-MI]
